Analysis of the shortcomings of fiber optic sensors

Ordinary fiber optic sensors, while highly sensitive and EMI-resistant, face challenges such as high cost, fragility, complex installation, and susceptibility to environmental and mechanical factors.

High Cost

Fiber optic sensors generally require specialized components such as lasers, LEDs, photodetectors, optical fibers, connectors, and interrogator units, which are more expensive than conventional electronic sensors. Additionally, precise installation and splicing tools increase the overall system cost, making large-scale deployment financially challenging .

System Complexity

Designing and maintaining fiber optic sensor systems demands advanced technical expertise. Optimal performance requires careful management of optical power budgets, wavelength selection, and fiber routing. The signal processing units needed to interpret optical signals add further complexity .

Fragility and Handling Sensitivity

Optical fibers are delicate and prone to breakage under mechanical stress. Mishandling during installation or operation can lead to signal loss or sensor failure. Ordinary fibers are also sensitive to bending, microbending, and tensile stress, which can degrade performance .

Environmental and Mechanical Susceptibility

Although fiber optic sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, they can be affected by temperature fluctuations, vibration, humidity, and chemical exposure. Crosstalk and noise from environmental factors may reduce measurement accuracy, particularly in harsh or dynamic conditions .

Installation and Calibration Challenges

Precise alignment and termination of fibers are critical. Improper installation can result in signal attenuation or misinterpretation. Calibration and maintenance require specialized knowledge, which can limit usability in non-expert settings .

Summary

While ordinary fiber optic sensors offer high sensitivity, compact size, and immunity to EMI, their main weaknesses include high cost, system complexity, fragility, environmental sensitivity, and demanding installation requirements. These factors must be carefully considered when designing or deploying fiber optic sensing systems .
