Fiber optic cable joint wrapped with heat shrink tubing

Thickened heat shrink tubing provides mechanical reinforcement, environmental protection, and maintains optical performance at fiber optic splice joints.

Purpose and Function

Fiber optic heat shrink tubing, also called fiber splice tubes or fusion protection tubes, is designed to protect and reinforce fiber optic splices. The tubing rebuilds the fiber coating at the fusion joint, providing mechanical strength while preserving optical transmission properties. It also ensures moisture resistance, temperature stability, and protection against physical impacts, making it suitable for indoor, outdoor, and harsh environmental conditions .

Structure and Materials

Thickened heat shrink tubing typically consists of three main components:

  • Cross-linked polyolefin outer tube: Provides heat resistance, mechanical strength, and elongation properties. It shrinks tightly around the splice when heated, forming a secure protective layer .
  • Hot fusion inner tube: Made of a high-quality polymer that melts during heating to seal the splice, preventing air or moisture ingress and ensuring a smooth, bubble-free finish .
  • Reinforcing rod: Usually stainless steel (304 grade) or ceramic/quartz, polished to remove burrs. This rod prevents warping or fiber breakage during heat shrinkage and adds structural support to the joint . Some designs include a clear sleeve for visual inspection of the splice before shrinking, and the tubing can be customized for single fiber or ribbon fiber applications .

Installation and Performance

  • The tubing is slid over the fiber splice and heated using a heat gun or oven. The outer polyolefin shrinks, and the inner fusion tube melts to form a tight, airproof seal .
  • Operating temperature ranges typically span -45°C to +100°C, with full recovery at around 120°C .
  • The thickened design ensures enhanced mechanical protection, resistance to humidity, and long-term durability in outdoor or underground installations .
  • Customizable color options and clear sleeves facilitate identification and inspection during installation .

Applications

Thickened heat shrink tubing is widely used in:

  • Telecommunications networks for protecting fiber splices in FTTH, broadband, and data networks.
  • Outdoor and underground installations, where environmental exposure requires robust sealing.
  • Ribbon fiber splicing, where multiple fibers are joined simultaneously and require additional mechanical support . By combining mechanical reinforcement, environmental sealing, and optical integrity, thickened heat shrink tubing ensures reliable, long-lasting fiber optic connections.
