• Second digit “5”: The enclosure can withstand low-pressure water jets from any direction, protecting the equipment from rain, splashes, or routine external washing . This makes IP55 suitable for semi-outdoor locations, such as covered patios, garages, warehouses, or sheltered industrial areas where occasional water exposure occurs .

Suitable Applications

IP55 distribution boxes are commonly used in:

• Industrial environments with airborne dust from machinery .
• Greenhouses or indoor farms with high humidity .
• Laboratories where chemical splashes may occur .
• Public-facing electrical installations like traffic signs or semi-sheltered EV charging stations . They are not recommended for environments with direct exposure to high-pressure water, storms, marine conditions, or areas requiring full immersion protection. In such cases, higher IP ratings like IP65, IP66, or IP67 are more appropriate .

Practical Considerations

• Material and corrosion resistance: Even with IP55, the enclosure material should be suitable for the environment, especially in humid or coastal areas .
