Configuring the gateway on Huawei core switches

Huawei core switches can be configured as the gateway for wired and wireless users by setting up VLANs, routing, uplinks, and Eth-Trunk interfaces.

Core Switch Role

Huawei core switches (CSS) act as the central point in a campus network, handling high-volume data forwarding, routing, and wired/wireless convergence. They can manage APs and transmit wireless traffic while serving as the gateway for all user devices on the network .

Basic Configuration Steps

  1. Connect and Access the Switch
    • Connect your PC to the switch via console cable or Mini USB.
    • Power on the switch and log in using the console interface .
  2. Set System Parameters
    • Configure the system name: sysname
    • Set the date and time: clock datetime HH:MM:SS YYYY-MM-DD
    • Configure the time zone: clock timezone {add|minus} .
  3. Configure VLANs
    • Create VLANs for different user groups: vlan batch 2 3 4
    • Assign interfaces to VLANs:

    • Repeat for other interfaces as needed .
  4. Configure Layer 3 Interfaces
    • Assign IP addresses to VLAN interfaces (VLANIF) to enable routing:

  5. Configure Uplink and Eth-Trunk

    • Connect the trunk to aggregation switches or routers .
  6. Enable Core Switch Services
    • Configure MAD (Multi-active Detection) for stack redundancy.

  7. Save Configuration
    • Save the running configuration to startup: save .

Verification

  • Check interface status: display interface
  • Verify VLAN and routing: display vlan and display ip routing-table
  • Test connectivity to the egress router and internal VLANs.

  • For small to mid-sized campus networks, the S5700 series is commonly used as the core switch, with AR series routers as the egress device .
  • Ensure proper IP planning and VLAN segmentation to avoid conflicts.
  • For advanced setups, consider stacking core switches and configuring Eth-Trunk for both uplinks and downlinks to improve reliability and bandwidth .
