How to connect the outgoing lines of a three-level distribution box

Outgoing lines in a three-phase distribution box are connected by properly linking each phase, neutral, and earth conductor to the corresponding MCBs, busbars, and terminal blocks while ensuring load balance and safety.

Step 1: Safety Precautions

Before starting, isolate all incoming power to the distribution box and ensure that MCBs, MCCBs, or RCCBs are switched off. Use insulated tools and wear protective equipment. Verify that the panel is suitable for indoor use and that all gland plates are removed to prevent debris ingress during wiring .

Step 2: Identify Phases and Terminals

  • Label the three phases as L1 (R), L2 (Y), L3 (B).
  • Identify the neutral (N) and earth (E/PE) terminals.
  • Ensure that each outgoing MCB or RCBO has clearly marked input and output terminals .

Step 3: Connect the Main Switch

  • Connect the incoming three-phase supply to the main MCCB or MCB.
  • If using a four-pole breaker, connect the neutral to the neutral terminal on the breaker; otherwise, connect it directly to the neutral busbar .
  • Connect the earth wire to the earth busbar.

Step 4: Busbar and Outgoing MCB Connections

  • Connect the output of the main MCCB to the input of all outgoing MCBs using busbars.
  • Ensure that each MCB receives all three phases for three-phase loads.
  • For single-phase loads, connect the live wire from the corresponding phase and neutral if required .
  • Tighten all connections to the recommended torque (typically around 2.0 Nm) and avoid using power tool screwdrivers directly on terminals .

Step 5: Neutral and Earth Distribution

  • Connect the neutral wire from the supply to the neutral busbar. If multiple neutral links exist, interconnect them.
  • Connect the earth wire to the earth busbar, linking all earth terminals together.
  • Ensure that all unused terminals are insulated with provided caps or blanks .

Step 6: Outgoing Load Connections

  • For each outgoing circuit, connect the three-phase wires to the output terminals of the MCB.
  • If the load requires neutral, connect it to the neutral busbar.
  • Connect the load's earth wire to the earth busbar.
  • For RCCB-protected circuits, connect the RCCB after the main switch and then feed the outgoing MCBs from the RCCB .

Step 7: Verification and Labeling

  • Verify that all connections are secure and correctly labeled.
  • Check that the load is balanced across all three phases to prevent overloading.
  • Replace all covers and doors before energizing the panel . Following these steps ensures safe, efficient, and code-compliant distribution of power from a three-level distribution box to multiple loads. Proper labeling and phase identification are crucial for maintenance and troubleshooting.
