A distribution box safely divides incoming electrical power into multiple circuits using breakers, busbars, neutral and earth bars, and protective devices like RCDs or RCBOs.

Single-Phase Distribution Box

  • The incoming phase and neutral connect to the main MCB or double-pole main switch .
  • Power is then distributed to branch MCBs for individual circuits.
  • Neutral bar collects all neutral wires, and earth bar connects all protective earth conductors.
  • RCCBs or RCDs are installed to monitor leakage currents and enhance safety.
  • High-power circuits (e.g., ovens, water heaters) are placed closer to the main switch, while low-power circuits (lights, alarms) are positioned further along the busbar .

Three-Phase Distribution Box

  • Each phase (L1, L2, L3) is connected to a separate busbar.
  • Branch MCBs are connected to the appropriate phase busbar.
  • Neutral and earth bars are shared across all phases.
  • RCDs or RCBOs can be installed per phase or per circuit depending on protection strategy .

Safety and Installation Considerations

  • Install the box in a dry, accessible location with proper ventilation, typically around 1.5 meters above the floor .
  • Ensure IP/NEMA ratings match environmental conditions (e.g., IP66 for outdoor use), .
  • Maintain neat cable management, correct wire gauge, and proper insulation.
  • Label all circuits clearly for easy identification and future maintenance .
  • Comply with local standards such as IEC 61439, IEC 60898, NEC, or BS 7671 .
