Cable tray converted into a box

You can convert an open cable tray into a box by enclosing it with wood or other materials, adding a lid, and creating access holes for cables while maintaining ventilation.

Materials and Tools

To convert a cable tray into a box, you will need:

  • Plywood or solid wood panels for sides, ends, bottom, and lid
  • Wood glue and screws or nails for assembly
  • Sandpaper (220 grit) for smoothing edges
  • Router or saw for cutting rabbet joints
  • Drill for cable access holes
  • Optional: wood stain or polyurethane for finishing

Steps to Convert

  1. Measure and Cut Panels: Measure the dimensions of your existing cable tray and cut panels for the sides, ends, bottom, and lid. Ensure the lid fits flush with the box edges .
  2. Create Rabbet Joints: Use a router to cut rabbet joints along the edges of the sides and ends. This allows the lid to sit securely and the box to be structurally stable .
  3. Assemble the Box: Glue and screw the panels together. Start with the sides and ends, then attach the bottom. Reinforce with cross braces if needed for rigidity .
  4. Add Cable Access Holes: Drill holes in the sides or ends for cables to pass through. Ensure holes are large enough for plugs and adapters but not so large that cables slip out .
  5. Finishing Touches: Sand all edges smooth, apply stain or polyurethane for durability, and optionally paint or decorate the box .
  6. Install the Lid: Place the lid on top, ensuring it fits flush. You can leave it removable for easy access to cables .

Additional Tips

  • Ventilation: If housing power strips or adapters, consider adding ventilation holes to prevent overheating .
  • Cable Organization: Use cable ties or Velcro straps inside the box to group cables and reduce clutter .
  • Mounting Options: The box can be placed on a desk, shelf, or mounted under a desk for a cleaner look .
  • Safety: Ensure the box material is non-conductive or properly insulated if it will contain live electrical components . By following these steps, your open cable tray can be transformed into a neat, enclosed cable management box that hides clutter, protects cables, and improves the aesthetics of your workspace.
