How to mark galvanized cable trays in CAD

You can mark galvanized cable trays in CAD by using labels, hatch patterns, line styles, or dedicated CAD blocks to visually distinguish them in your drawings.

Using Labels and Flow Arrows

In AutoCAD MEP, you can annotate cable trays as you draw them:

  • Go to the Manage tab → Preferences panel → Cable Tray.
  • Under Labels and Flow Arrows, select a style and layout method. You can choose to display labels only, flow arrows only, or both.
  • Enter a descriptive label such as “Galvanized Steel” to clearly indicate the material of the tray .

Applying Line Patterns or Hatch

  • Under Cable Tray Pattern, select a line or hatch pattern to represent galvanized trays.
  • You can specify vertical or 45-degree lines and adjust the spacing to differentiate galvanized trays from other types.
  • This visual distinction helps installers and engineers quickly identify tray types in coordination drawings .

Using CAD Blocks

  • Download pre-made cable tray CAD blocks in DWG format from resources like PinCad, CADBlocksFree, or LineCAD ( ).
  • These blocks include ladder trays, perforated trays, solid-bottom trays, and wire mesh trays.
  • Insert the appropriate block into your drawing and add a label or hatch to indicate it is galvanized.
  • Blocks can be placed in top, front, or side views for detailed documentation.

Best Practices

  • Maintain a layer system: Place galvanized trays on a dedicated layer named “CableTray_Galvanized” for easy visibility and filtering.
  • Use consistent annotation styles across all drawings to avoid confusion.
  • Include a legend or key in your drawing set to explain the symbols, hatches, and labels used for galvanized trays. By combining CAD blocks, labels, hatch patterns, and dedicated layers, you can clearly mark galvanized cable trays in your CAD drawings, ensuring accurate communication for design, installation, and documentation purposes .
