How to use conduit for electrical wires in a distribution box

To install conduit in a distribution box, select the correct conduit type, prepare the knockout, attach the connector, cut and deburr the conduit, and secure it firmly to the box.

Step 1: Safety First

Always turn off power at the main breaker before working on any electrical box to prevent electric shock or fire hazards . Wear safety glasses and gloves when cutting or handling conduit.

Step 2: Select and Prepare the Knockout

Identify the knockout hole on the distribution box that aligns with your conduit run. Remove the knockout carefully using pliers or a screwdriver and hammer. Inspect the edges to ensure they are smooth and free of burrs to prevent damage to wire insulation .

Step 3: Install the Connector

  • For EMT or rigid metal conduit, insert the threaded end of the connector into the knockout from the outside.
  • Inside the box, thread on a locknut or compression ring and tighten it securely using pliers or a locknut wrench .
  • For PVC conduit, use a male adapter with threads on one end and a socket for the conduit on the other. Secure the threaded end with a locknut and use PVC primer and solvent cement to attach the conduit to the adapter .

Step 4: Cut and Prepare the Conduit

Measure the required length of conduit and cut it using a tubing cutter, hacksaw, or PVC cutter. Remove burrs from both the inside and outside of the cut ends using a deburring tool or utility knife to prevent wire damage .

Step 5: Secure the Conduit

  • Slide the conduit into the connector until it bottoms out.
  • For set-screw connectors, tighten the screw with a screwdriver until the conduit is firmly gripped.
  • For compression connectors, tighten the nut until the internal ring compresses against the conduit wall .
  • Ensure the conduit is secured within three feet of the box using straps or clamps to maintain mechanical stability .

Step 6: Pull the Wires

Use fish tape to pull the electrical wires through the conduit. Make sure the wires are not twisted or damaged during the process. Once pulled, connect the wires inside the distribution box according to the circuit requirements .

Step 7: Final Inspection

Check that all connections are tight, the conduit is properly aligned, and the installation meets local electrical codes. Inspectors may twist connectors to ensure they are secure, so a firm installation is essential . By following these steps, you ensure a safe, durable, and code-compliant conduit installation in your distribution box.
