This termination is handled by an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) or Optical Network Unit (ONU), which is the active device that receives light signals transmitted from the service provider's Optical Line Terminal (OLT) . The ONT performs photoelectric conversion, turning the incoming light pulses into standard electrical signals, such as Ethernet frames, that can be used by home or office devices .

How It Works

• Downstream (Receiving Data): The OLT sends data as light pulses (commonly at 1490 nm) through the fiber. The ONT captures these photons using a Bidirectional Optical Sub-Assembly (BOSA), demodulates the light, and converts it into electrical signals for devices like routers or computers .
• Upstream (Sending Data): When the user sends data, the ONT converts electrical signals back into light pulses (commonly at 1310 nm) and transmits them upstream to the OLT .

Physical Termination

The fiber cable is typically terminated with a connector, such as SC/APC, which plugs into the ONT. This connector ensures precise alignment of the fiber core for efficient light transmission and prevents damage to the fragile glass strand . The ONT then outputs data through standard copper Ethernet cables (Cat5e or Cat6) to local devices .
