TM completes PoP project phase one installation
PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) has completed its new fibre optic network hub or point of presence
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has developed a network of fiber optic hubs, also known as Points of Presence (PoPs), which serve as connection points where devices link to each other and the internet . These hubs bring fiber closer to end-users, reducing reliance on mobile internet and providing faster, more reliable broadband services. The initiative is part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), aiming to establish 4,370 PoPs nationwide, with 4,323 near rural schools and 47 near industrial areas .
Phase one of TM's PoP project involved 677 sites across northern Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, with 233 PoP circuits installed and completed ahead of schedule . Phase two, spanning 2022–2025, focuses on the remaining sites, including 174 locations in central Malaysia, enhancing connectivity for remote communities and industrial zones . These hubs are strategically placed to support digital inclusion, economic growth, and the deployment of technologies like 5G.
Fiber optic hubs improve internet quality, support new infrastructure development, and attract technology companies and startups requiring high-speed connectivity . By providing low-latency, high-bandwidth connections, PoPs enable better access to online education, telecommuting, and digital services, particularly in underserved areas . They also contribute to balanced regional development and foster innovation.
Besides TM, several companies provide fiber optic solutions in Malaysia, including Fibrecomm, Bullish Aim, TM Global, Microlink, Premiumtel, and TelcoHub1 Data Centre . These providers offer high-performance fiber networks, cloud transition solutions, and interconnectivity services, supporting both commercial and government sectors. MSAR is another provider offering high-speed, low-latency fiber connectivity across Malaysia .
Malaysia's fiber optic hubs are a critical component of the country's digital infrastructure, bridging the digital divide and enabling faster, more reliable internet access. Through TM's PoP network and contributions from other telecom providers, Malaysia is enhancing connectivity for education, industry, and technological innovation, while laying the groundwork for future communication technologies like 5G .
