How to Select and Configure the Power Distribution Box in the Computer Room

Proper configuration of a power distribution box ensures safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery to all IT equipment in a server room or data center.

1. Planning and Site Assessment

Before installation, conduct a thorough on-site evaluation to assess space, airflow, and environmental conditions. Choose a location that is dry, well-ventilated, and free from corrosive gases or flammable materials. Ensure the height of the distribution box allows convenient access for maintenance, typically around 1.4 meters from the floor, while maintaining uniformity if multiple units are installed . Map out the server rack layout and determine the number and type of devices to be powered, including servers, switches, and storage units .

2. Selecting the Right PDU or Distribution Box

Choose a PDU type based on your needs:

  • Basic PDUs: Simple power distribution without monitoring.
  • Metered PDUs: Measure total power consumption.
  • Monitored/Intelligent PDUs: Provide real-time monitoring, remote control, and load balancing.
  • Switched PDUs: Allow remote power cycling of individual outlets . Consider single-phase or three-phase PDUs, and ensure the outlet types (C13, C19, BS1363, Schuko) match your equipment .

3. Installation and Mounting

  • Mount PDUs vertically on the rear struts of server racks using supplied brackets and M6 cage nuts, or horizontally if space requires.
  • For redundancy, use dual PDUs connected to separate power sources (A and B feeds) to ensure continuous operation .
  • Ensure tight and secure connections; loose wiring can cause failures or hazards.
  • Strip wires appropriately and conceal cores to prevent accidental contact .

4. Grounding and Neutral Connections

  • Equip the distribution box with robust grounding terminals to provide reliable protective grounding.
  • Ensure neutral terminals are properly connected to maintain circuit safety and reliability .

5. Circuit Identification and Labeling

  • Use color-coded wiring (e.g., yellow/green for ground) for easy identification.
  • Clearly label each circuit and outlet with its purpose and number on the front of the box to simplify maintenance and troubleshooting .

6. Integration with UPS and Load Management

  • Connect PDUs to UPS systems to provide backup power during outages.
  • Plan the critical power path and calculate total load to avoid overloading circuits.
  • For intelligent PDUs, configure network interfaces for remote monitoring and management .
  • Implement load balancing across circuits to minimize power loss and prevent overheating .

7. Maintenance and Safety

  • Keep the area clean and free of debris to ensure safety and ease of access.
  • Conduct regular inspections to check connections, grounding, and PDU performance.
  • Follow industry standards and IT infrastructure guidelines to maintain reliability and compliance . By following these steps, you can configure a power distribution box that provides safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery, supports redundancy, and allows for monitoring and proactive management of your server room or data center.
