Fiber Optic Cable Connector MDC

The MDC (Miniature Duplex Connector) is a high-density, very small form factor fiber optic connector designed to triple the density of LC connectors while maintaining reliable performance.

Overview

The MDC connector is a duplex (two-fiber) optical connector that uses 1.25mm ferrules, the same as LC connectors, but in a smaller footprint, making it ideal for high-density applications in data centers, telecom, and hyperscale networks . It is part of the Very Small Form Factor (VSFF) family, designed to maximize fiber density without compromising optical performance or reliability .

Key Features

  • High Density: MDC connectors allow three times the fiber density of LC connectors, supporting up to 216 duplex connectors (432 fibers) per 1RU panel .
  • Transceiver Compatibility: Supports multiple MDC cables in modern transceivers, including four cables in QSFP-DD or OSFP modules and two cables in SFP-DD modules .
  • Push-Pull Boot: The DirectConec™ push-pull boot enables easy insertion and removal in dense panels without affecting neighboring connectors .
  • Polarity Management: Polarity can be changed in the field or factory without tools, preventing fiber damage and simplifying reconfiguration .
  • Adapter Options: Three-port MDC adapters fit standard LC panel openings, allowing seamless integration and high-density deployment .

Applications

MDC connectors are widely used in:

  • Data centers: For high-density patch panels and transceiver connections.
  • Telecom networks: Supporting high-speed, high-bandwidth fiber links.
  • Hyperscale and cloud infrastructure: Enabling compact, scalable fiber deployments .

Advantages Over LC Connectors

  • Smaller footprint: Saves rack space and allows more connections per unit area.
  • Higher density: Triples the number of fibers in the same panel space.
  • Tool-free handling: Push-pull design simplifies installation and maintenance.
  • Future-ready: Compatible with emerging transceiver MSAs and high-speed optical modules .

Summary

The MDC connector is a compact, high-performance solution for modern fiber optic networks, offering maximum density, easy installation, and flexible polarity management. It is particularly valuable in environments where space is limited and fiber counts are rapidly increasing, such as hyperscale data centers, 5G backhaul, and cloud infrastructure .
