Fiber Optic Cable Cabling Acceptance Testing

A comprehensive fiber optic acceptance testing plan ensures installation quality, verifies optical performance, and documents compliance with project specifications before system handover.

1. Objectives

The main objectives of fiber optic acceptance testing are to:

  • Confirm installation quality and proper routing of fibers
  • Verify optical performance, including insertion loss and reflectance
  • Check continuity and polarity of each fiber link
  • Identify splice, connector, bend, or reflection issues
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards
  • Provide complete documentation for handover and future troubleshooting

2. Pre-Test Preparation

  • Visual Inspection: Examine all fiber connectors and end-faces using a microscope to detect dust, scratches, pits, or damaged ferrules
  • Cleaning: Clean all connectors and mating adapters to prevent high insertion loss or reflection
  • Equipment Calibration: Calibrate Optical Power Meters and OTDRs according to manufacturer instructions and project requirements
  • Launch and Receive Cables: Use launch cables (1 km for pigtail tests) to allow accurate measurement of connector and splice losses

3. Testing Methods

a. Continuity Test

  • Use a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to check fiber continuity, detect broken fibers, severe bends, or incorrect routing

b. Insertion Loss Testing

  • Measure link attenuation using an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) or Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM)
  • Perform tests at the operational wavelength(s) of the network (e.g., 850 nm for multimode, 1310/1550 nm for singlemode)
  • Conduct bidirectional testing if required to ensure accurate loss characterization

c. OTDR Testing

  • Use an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to measure splice loss, connector loss, and overall span analysis
  • Save all OTDR traces for documentation and future reference
  • Ensure proper index of refraction settings and use launch/receive cables to avoid pulse overload

d. Polarity and Continuity Verification

  • Confirm correct fiber polarity and end-to-end connectivity
  • Verify that fibers are not incorrectly spliced or crossed

4. Acceptance Criteria

  • Insertion loss and reflectance must meet project specifications
  • No physical defects on connectors or splices
  • OTDR traces must show acceptable splice and connector losses
  • Fiber continuity and polarity must be correct
  • All test results documented and reviewed for approval

5. Documentation

  • Record all test results, including OTDR traces, insertion loss measurements, and visual inspection reports
  • Label each fiber and test file according to project naming conventions for traceability
  • Provide a complete acceptance report to the client or system owner for final approval

6. Handover

  • Only after all tests meet the acceptance criteria should the fiber link be certified and handed over for operational use
