Instructions for Use of 100G Active Optical Module

100G Active Optical Modules (AOCs) should be handled in ESD-protected environments, properly oriented in the QSFP28 or compatible port, and connected using the correct fiber or MPO cables to ensure safe and reliable 100Gbps operation.

Handling and Safety

  • ESD Precautions: Always unpack and handle the module in an ESD-protected workspace. The module ships in ESD-protective packaging, and standard ESD precautions apply to prevent damage to high-speed pins and electrical inputs (1 kV on high-speed pins, 2 kV on other inputs) .
  • Laser Safety: 100G optical modules are Class 1 laser products. Avoid direct eye exposure to the optical interface .

Installation

  • Port Compatibility: Insert the module into a QSFP28, QSFP-DD, or other compatible 100G port. Ensure the module is hot-swappable, allowing insertion or removal without powering down the system .
  • Connector Orientation: For MPO connectors, the key should be oriented upward. Transmit channels are typically on the left, and receive channels on the right when facing the connector .
  • Cable Selection: Use the recommended MPO or fiber optic cables for the module type. For example, Basler 100G SR4 modules require type B polarity MPO cables .

Operation

  • Data Transmission: 100G modules use four-lane architecture (25 Gbps per lane) or two-lane architecture (50 Gbps per lane for SFP-DD/SFP56-DD) with NRZ or PAM4 modulation .
  • Breakout Modes: Some modules support logical division into multiple lower-speed Ethernet ports, allowing flexible deployment .
  • Link Distance: Check the module specifications for maximum transmission distance. For example, Cisco QSFP-100G-SR4-S supports up to 100m over OM4 multimode fiber, while Gigalight QSFP28 ZR4 modules support up to 80 km over single-mode fiber .

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Digital Diagnostics: Many 100G modules provide digital diagnostic monitoring for temperature, voltage, and optical power .
  • Cleaning: Keep the optical connectors clean using fiber optic cleaning tools to prevent signal degradation.
  • Removal: Gently pull the module out of the port using the release latch; avoid excessive force to prevent damage to the module or port . By following these handling, installation, and operational guidelines, 100G Active Optical Modules can deliver high-speed, reliable network connectivity while minimizing the risk of damage or performance issues.
