Recent additions include Google's Equiano cable, connecting Ghana to Portugal and South Africa, and the 2Africa cable, planned to land in Ghana, further enhancing connectivity and mitigating disruptions caused by cable cuts .
Domestically, Ghana has developed a robust fiber optic backbone. The Eastern Corridor Fiber Optic Backbone, completed in 2015, spans 800 km from the coast to northern regions, linking towns such as Ho, Tamale, Yendi, and Bawku, and extending connectivity to 120 district centers . Other initiatives include underground and aerial fiber networks deployed by operators like MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo, and Glo, covering about 38 cities and towns . These networks provide redundancy and high-capacity routes for data transmission.
Private sector projects are accelerating broadband access. Vivendi's CanalBox is rolling out affordable FTTH services in Accra and Kumasi, aiming to increase digital inclusion and provide high-speed, unlimited internet to households and small businesses . The government supports these initiatives to reduce internet costs and expand nationwide access.
Ghana has implemented the Dig Once Policy, requiring fiber-optic ducts and access chambers to be integrated into all new road construction projects . This policy reduces the risk of fiber cuts, lowers deployment and maintenance costs, and accelerates the rollout of 4G, 5G, and other advanced digital services. By embedding fiber infrastructure during road construction, Ghana ensures faster, cheaper, and more sustainable network expansion.
Thanks to these efforts, Ghana's internet penetration has grown dramatically, reaching nearly 70% of the population by early 2025, with over 24 million users and 38.3 million active mobile connections . The combination of international cables, national backbones, FTTH projects, and supportive policies positions Ghana as a regional leader in digital infrastructure and broadband connectivity.
