Core Switch Indicator Lights

Core switch LEDs provide real-time information on system status, power, port activity, fan operation, and stack configuration, helping administrators monitor and troubleshoot the switch.

System and Power LEDs

• System LED: Indicates overall switch health. Green means normal operation, amber signals minor environmental alarms, and red indicates major environmental issues or system failure (Cisco) .
• Power Supply LED: Green indicates normal operation; amber may indicate input loss or a single PSU in operation; no light means the PSU has failed or is not installed correctly .
• RPS (Redundant Power Supply) LED: Lights when the internal power fails and the RPS takes over .

Port LEDs

• Link/Activity: Green indicates a link is up; blinking green shows data transmission; amber may indicate errors, STP blocking, or administrative shutdown .
• Speed and Duplex: Some switches allow port LEDs to indicate speed (10/100/1000 Mb/s) or duplex mode, selectable via a mode button .
• Port Faults: Amber or flashing LEDs can indicate link faults, excessive collisions, CRC errors, or alignment/jabber errors .

Fan LEDs

• Normal Operation: Green indicates fans are running correctly.
• Fault: Amber or off indicates fan failure or tachometer faults exceeding limits .

Stack LEDs

• Stack Member Status: Shows the sequence and role of switches in a stack. Active switch, standby, and member roles are indicated via specific LED patterns .
• UID/Beacon LED: Blue LED used to locate a specific switch in a rack or stack, activated via a button or CLI .

Console and Master LEDs

• Console LED: Blinks during POST; solid green indicates active console session; amber indicates POST failure .
• Master LED: Solid green indicates the switch is the master in a stack or standalone configuration .

Best Practices

• Ensure LEDs are visible and unobstructed for quick monitoring .
• Use LED colors consistently: green for normal, amber for warnings, red for critical issues .
• Monitor port LEDs for link activity and errors to maintain network performance . Understanding these LEDs allows network administrators to quickly assess switch health, identify faulty components, and troubleshoot connectivity issues efficiently.
