How OTDR Measures Fiber Length

An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) works by injecting short pulses of light into a fiber optic cable. Each of these events causes a portion of the light to be reflected back toward the OTDR, while some light is scattered along the fiber (Rayleigh backscatter) . Limitations

While OTDRs measure fiber length and locate faults, they are not ideal for precise insertion loss measurements; a separate optical power meter and light source are better suited for that task . OTDRs are most effective for fibers longer than approximately 250 meters or for networks with multiple splices .
