Bundling of optical cables

Optical cables can be bundled using binding tapes, corrugated pipes, resin-fixed bundles, or cable trays to ensure organized, protected, and efficient routing.

Binding Tapes

One common method involves using optical fiber binding tapes, which are designed to hold fibers together without causing damage. The tape typically has a hook side and a mat side, with the mat side contacting the fibers to prevent abrasion. To bundle fibers, arrange them neatly, cut a piece of tape to the appropriate length, wrap it around the bundle, and press the mat side against the hook side to secure the fibers snugly. This method ensures fibers remain organized and prevents crossover or tangling during installation .

Resin-Fixed Fiber Bundles

For manufacturing or pre-assembled bundles, resin-fixed optical fiber bundles are used. In this method, multiple fibers are grouped together and fixed at intervals with resin portions along their length. This reduces overall weight and cost while maintaining structural integrity and simplifying connections .

Corrugated Pipes and Cable Trays

During installation, fibers can be routed through corrugated pipes or cable trays to protect them from mechanical stress. Corrugated pipes should be cut to the desired length, and sharp ends wrapped with adhesive tape. Cable trays allow fibers to be divided evenly and routed along cabinet posts or supports, minimizing bending and avoiding interference with other cables . For longer distances or overhead installations, cable ladders may be used to maintain proper support and prevent sagging.

Active Optical Cable Bundling

In specialized applications, such as active optical cables (AOCs), fibers are broken out from the cable jacket, terminated with active connectors, and connected to converter components. Bundling in this context may also include simultaneous testing of transceiver optical engines to ensure performance .
