  • Cascading: Each switch connects via multiple ports to others, allowing independent or centralized management. Cascading supports a large number of switches but does not increase bandwidth. Each switch retains its own IP address, making it flexible for mixed hardware environments .
  • Stacking: Switches of the same model are connected to act as a single unit. Stacking maximizes port density and can boost network bandwidth, but the number of switches is limited by design .
  • Clustering: Similar to stacking, clusters allow multiple switches to be managed together, often used in enterprise networks for simplified administration .

Sharing a Switch Across Multiple Networks

Switches can support multiple networks using VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks):

  • VLANs: Logical segmentation of a switch into isolated networks. For example, VLAN 10 can serve Network A and VLAN 20 can serve Network B. Devices in separate VLANs cannot communicate unless routed through a Layer 3 device .
  • Trunk Ports: Used to carry multiple VLANs between switches, ensuring inter-switch communication while maintaining VLAN separation .
  • Access Ports: Connect end devices to a specific VLAN. Frames on access ports are untagged and belong to a single VLAN .

  • Unmanaged switches: Simple plug-and-play devices, suitable for small networks without VLANs or advanced configuration .
  • Managed switches: Offer VLAN support, Quality of Service (QoS), remote management, and advanced security features. Managed switches are essential for multi-network setups .

  • Use VLANs to segregate traffic for security and efficiency.
  • Connect switches using trunk ports for VLAN communication across multiple switches.
  • Consider stacking for high port density and simplified management.
