Optical Communication Cable

Structure and Components

An optical communication cable consists of one or more optical fibers, each made of a core and cladding. The core carries light signals, while the cladding has a lower refractive index to ensure total internal reflection, keeping light confined within the core . Fibers are coated with protective layers such as acrylate polymer or polyimide, and multiple fibers are bundled with a buffer or resin layer to form the cable core. Additional protective sheathing is added depending on the environment, including plenum, riser, LSZH, or direct-buried jackets .

Types of Fibers

  • Single-mode fibers: Have a small core diameter, allowing only one light path, suitable for long-distance, high-bandwidth communication.
  • Multimode fibers: Have a larger core, supporting multiple light paths, ideal for shorter distances and local networks.
  • Step-index vs graded-index: Step-index fibers have a uniform core refractive index, while graded-index fibers gradually change the refractive index to reduce mode dispersion and improve bandwidth .

Working Principle

Optical cables transmit data by converting electrical signals into light pulses using LEDs or laser diodes. Light travels through the fiber via total internal reflection, and at the receiving end, a photodetector converts light back into electrical signals . This method allows extremely high-speed data transfer with minimal signal loss and immunity to electromagnetic interference.
