Fiber Optic Cable Length Test

Fiber optic cable length testing is typically performed using an OTDR or an optical loss test set to measure the total cable length, verify splices, and ensure signal integrity.

Methods for L-Length Testing

1. Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): An OTDR sends pulses of light down the fiber and measures the time it takes for reflections to return. This allows you to determine the total cable length, locate splices, connectors, and faults, and measure individual splice losses. OTDR testing is especially useful for long outside plant cables with multiple splices, as it provides a detailed trace of the fiber's performance along its entire length . 2. Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) or Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM): This method measures end-to-end insertion loss and can also provide a length estimate if the equipment supports it. The procedure involves connecting a calibrated light source to one end of the fiber and a power meter to the other. By measuring the received power and comparing it to the reference, you can calculate the total loss and, in some cases, the approximate length based on known fiber attenuation per kilometer . 3. Visual Fault Locator (VFL): While primarily used for detecting breaks, bends, or faults, a VFL can help verify continuity over shorter distances. It is not precise for measuring exact length but is useful for troubleshooting and confirming that the fiber is continuous .

Recommended Procedure

  1. Prepare the Equipment: Use a calibrated OTDR or OLTS/LSPM. Ensure launch and receive cables are compatible with the fiber type.
  2. Clean Connectors: Properly clean all connectors and adapters to avoid measurement errors.
  3. Set Reference: For OLTS/LSPM, establish a 0 dB reference using a short reference cable.
  4. Measure: Connect the test equipment to the fiber under test. For OTDR, acquire a trace to visualize the fiber length and locate splices or faults. For OLTS, record the end-to-end loss and, if supported, the cable length.
  5. Document Results: Record the measured length, loss, and any anomalies for future reference and troubleshooting .

Key Considerations

  • Wavelength Selection: Test at the wavelength the network will operate (e.g., 1310 nm or 1550 nm for singlemode, 850 nm or 1300 nm for multimode).
  • Bidirectional Testing: For more accurate results, perform tests from both ends of the fiber.
  • Splice Verification: OTDR is the preferred method for verifying individual splices and identifying localized losses.
  • Safety: Never look directly into the fiber end when the light source is active, as laser light can damage eyes . By following these methods, you can accurately determine the L-length of a fiber optic cable, verify its integrity, and ensure the network meets performance specifications.
