Fiber optic router connected but no network

A fiber optic router showing no network is often caused by issues with the ONT, fiber cables, SFP modules, router configuration, or power supply.

Step 1: Check Physical Connections

Ensure all fiber optic cables are properly connected and free from visible damage, sharp bends, or contamination. Dirty connectors are a common cause of network failure, so clean them with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol if necessary . Verify that the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is powered on and functioning, as it converts the optical signal into an electrical signal for your router .

Step 2: Inspect Router and SFP Modules

Check the router and any SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) modules for proper installation and compatibility. Faulty or mismatched SFP modules can result in a link light without actual network traffic . If possible, swap the SFP modules with known-good units to test functionality.

Step 3: Power Cycle Devices

Restart the ONT, router, and any connected switches. Power cycling can resolve temporary glitches and restore connectivity . Ensure that all devices receive stable power and that any POE injectors are functioning correctly, as improper power delivery can prevent network communication .

Step 4: Check Network Configuration

Verify that the router is correctly configured for your ISP, including IP settings, DHCP, and firmware updates. Misconfigured settings or outdated firmware can prevent devices from obtaining network access . If using multiple switches, ensure they are compatible and properly connected, as “dumb” switches may not handle certain traffic correctly .

Step 5: Test Connectivity

Use a laptop or other device to test direct connectivity to the router or ONT. If a static IP does not allow pings or network scans, the issue may lie between the ONT and router or within the router itself . Tools like optical power meters or OTDRs can help measure signal strength and detect fiber link issues .

Step 6: Contact Your ISP

If all hardware and configuration checks fail, contact your internet service provider. They can verify service status, test the fiber line remotely, and replace faulty equipment if necessary . By systematically checking physical connections, hardware, power, and configuration, most fiber optic network issues can be identified and resolved efficiently.
